Welcome to this week’s episode of The Mindset Mentor Meets Podcast which hears Angela interviewing David Grevemberg, CEO, Commonwealth Games Federation.
About our guest
David is Chief Executive at the Commonwealth Games Federation, the organisation responsible for the Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Youth Games and many other initiatives that inspire Commonwealth athletes to drive the ambition and power of all Commonwealth citizens through sport.
Previously, David was CEO of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee with ultimate managerial responsibility for the organisation's successful preparation and staging of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Before that, David was the Executive Director of Sport and International Federation Relations at the International Paralympic Committee.
A former competitive wrestler, during his career he has also served as a coach, athlete agent, team administrator, consultant and Board member.
About this show
David's passion for diversity and equality is evident in this episode and he works tirelessly to educate people in this area, sharing the lessons he has learnt along the way, following his upbringing in New Orleans.
His love of sport is also clear in this episode and when an injury put an end to his own sporting career, he chose to lead in sport instead. David shares that the need for connection is critical in jujitsu which is a sport he engaged in as an athlete. He believes connection is also crucial in teamwork and group dynamics, alongside 3 other elements which he shares with us.
He talks about knowing when to lead and when to follow. When times are tough he likes to lead from the front, and when times are great, he leads from behind and empowers his team.
He believes it's important to not allow himself to be over anxious or over self-absorbed so he can perform at his best.
An uplifting and inspiring half hour.

Monday Sep 07, 2020
Monday Sep 07, 2020
Welcome to this week’s episode of The Mindset Mentor Meets Podcast which hears Angela interviewing David Brear, Group CEO at 11:FS.
About our guest
David is Group CEO of 11:FS and since his dream of being a sportsperson was crushed (along with the ligaments in his knee!), he has worked in pretty much every angle of the financial services industry, never losing the competitive desire to win.
Having pitched, established and run billion-pound transformations for some of the biggest FS companies on the planet, the realisation that digital banking is only 1% finished has spurred the desire to establish an organisation that can actually make it happen.
11:FS is a challenger consultancy building out new propositions and ventures in the UK, US, Europe and Asia for some of the biggest brands on the planet. Alongside this, 11:FS build in-house products from competitor benchmarking tools like 11:FS Pulse, to core banking systems like 11:FS Foundry.
Most recently, David has led the creation and market establishment of the challenger business bank Mettle for Natwest in the UK, proving that big banks can fight back against the fintech threat.
He is also a host of the global business podcasts, Fintech Insider and Insurtech Insider.
About this show
David is in a class of his own and is the only person Angela has interviewed that says self-doubt doesn't feature in his world. David grew up around competitive sport and an injury meant he couldn't pursue his dream of being a sportsperson.
His Dad advised him to look for an industry that would always be broken and this meant he found a role in Financial Services. He wasn't pleased with his 2.1 result in a computing degree and it was this that made him decide that he would work harder than anyone else around him. He works very hard at everything he does and this has brought him success. He has the ability to do this without trampling on other people.
His biggest fear is creating opportunities that he doesn't fulfil and this means he doesn't feel he is in competition with anybody else.
An uplifting and inspiring half hour.

Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Welcome to this week’s episode of The Mindset Mentor Meets Podcast which hears Angela interviewing Mark Palmer, CEO at Gobeyond Partners, part of Webhelp.
About our guest
Mark is the CEO of Gobeyond Partners (part of Webhelp), a market leader in customer experience, customer journey design and operations transformation.
Mark started his career in France in 1992 working for Valeo (a CAC 40 automotive group) where he spent 9 years of his career. Mark started in production management, established a successful business improvement academy in Paris, became the Key Account Director for Japanese manufacturers in Europe and went onto run the UK Division, appointed on his 30th Birthday. His final role at Valeo was as the global management development director.
Mark joined OEE Consulting in 2001 and became MD in 2008. From 2008 > 2018, the firm grew into a mid-tier player and quintupled in size - working with some of the UK’s best-known organisations. The business was sold to Webhelp in 2018. OEE then merged with Webhelp’s professional services business to form Gobeyond Partners.
Mark has a degree in French and an MBA from Cardiff Business School.
About this show
Mark shares his proudest moments which include how he tackled the difficult task of making people redundant which on first hearing might sound shocking but he goes on to tell us HOW he went about this thankless role with heart and by doing the right things in the right way. The response from the people demonstrates they felt.
He generously talks about the lessons he has learnt along the way, including after a sleepless night wondering how he was going to sort out a mess he and the team were in, he created a new way of working based on co-creating value with clients and placing the client at the centre of the narrative.
Mark is cool with showing his vulnerability and says its absolute okay to fail and be 'a bit rubbish sometimes', which is something that will make many of us breathe a sigh of relief.
This half hour is packed with open and honest reflection.

#29 The Mindset Mentor Meets...CEO at Criticaleye, Matthew Blagg
Tuesday Jul 21, 2020
Tuesday Jul 21, 2020
Welcome to this week’s episode of The Mindset Mentor Meets Podcast which hears Angela interviewing Matthew Blagg, CEO at Criticaleye.
About our guest
A true entrepreneur, Matthew’s experiences setting up businesses, advising firms on strategy and corporate development and sourcing senior executives for boards have shaped his role as CEO of Criticaleye. His acute understanding of the challenges facing today’s leaders means he is well positioned to advise individuals in these roles. Matthew believes that executive collaboration needs careful framing and management so that senior executives get the most out of sharing information and ideas. He also thinks that in an increasingly complex landscape where leaders ‘don’t know what they don’t know’, CEOs should be seizing the opportunity to learn and gain insight from the wider business community.
Before Criticaleye, Matthew founded a strategic consulting firm. In this role, he advised firms across a diverse range of sectors, from venture capital to telecommunications, and took responsibility for the international operations of a UK listed business services company, establishing and maintaining its relationships across Europe, the Middle-East, Central Asia, North and Latin America. In 1990, he founded a successful mail order business which he sold in 1995.
Matthew has extensive chairing experience having facilitated a variety of events on topics from strategy implementation to emerging economies. Recently, he has broadened these chairing skills to include the facilitation of intensive strategic sessions for the boards of leading UK organisations. He also continues to be a well respected sounding board for several Members within the Criticaleye Community, having established a trusted reputation for sharing both honest and practical insights.
He is also a Member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Development Board and a keen sportsman.
About this show
Matthew is just amazing. Angela loved this conversation and Matthew shares how he built and sold a business by the time he was 24 and went on to build a further 3 companies including his current one, Criticaleye. He believes working with people brings a richness to his life and being curious about people keeps him feeling full of life.
He didn't go to university and describes himself as 'academically useless.' His exposure to all aspects of business from leaving school, has meant this hasn't mattered at all. He felt the fear in those early years and was often a swan swimming, yet this feeling of being uncomfortable has helped him build resilience that means new experiences don't phase him.
He prides himself on not having a visible ego and believes hard work and facing insecurities has contributed to his success.
This half hour really is a joy.
